Impact of cold weather on your locks

As you’ve probably noticed, the temperatures are starting to drop in the northwest. Today I want to share some tips on how to prepare your locks for the colder weather that is fast approaching. The winters in the northwest can be pretty brutal, and that cold weather often has a negative impact on your locks. Last winter we received a lot of calls from our Seattle area customers complaining their exterior door locks were jamming up.

With that, we recommend preparing your locks before the harsher weather arrives. The best and most effective way to prepare your locks for colder weather is to disassemble the lock and spray the insides with a grease/lubricant.

Understandably, a lot of our customers at Locksmith Service Inc. do not want to take apart their locks…the next best thing is to be sure you purchase a spray lubricant and spray into the keyhole for a few seconds. Following that you want to insert your key and turn it back and forth a few times to help spread the lubricant. There are a lot of spray lubricant options, however, we recommend Tri-Flow Superior lubricant, which can be found at most hardware stores.

Remember, it’s best to get your locks lubricated now to ensure they don’t jam up once those colder temperatures arrive.
